As we travel through Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, we reflect on the historical significance of our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). These institutions educate a significant percentage of African-American students and maintain a historical and cultural connection to their local communities. We are proud to be visiting five campuses that continue to serve their students well. We applaud their efforts and will continue to work with each of them long after the Tour leaves their grounds.
For a great summary of the history of these institutions, read here. Of interesting note, the racial diversity of these institutions has changed with the times in order to keep up enrollment and increase racial harmony.
